Planning to stomp through snow drifts in your hunter boots?
I don’t think it’s a great idea!
I will tell you why through the course of this article…
Well, to start off,
The original hunter boots were made to be worn in the rain. Made of rubber they might be and thus being waterproof, they might be suitable for the start of winters, but when it starts to snow heavily, hunter boots won’t serve the purpose simply because they do not have any insulation and neither they have slip resistant soles.
Still want to wear your hunter boots in the snow, I have ideas for that as well.
Want to know how?
Let’s find out…
What Kind of Boots do You Wear in the Snow?
While opting for a snow to finger the frosty winter storm, you would want it to keep your feet warm and dry. But this is not all, they also need to be protective and comfortable for dealing with various winter elements.
Snow boots have to strike a delicate balance between the sole, the uppers and the structure of the boots.
Let’s find out what all essential features are required by a perfect snow boot:
1.) The Lining of Snow Boots: Gore-Tex is an excellent material used in the lining of snow boots to allow your feet to be breathable and dry all day by restricting water absorption and letting out vapour.
2.) The Insulation of Snow Boots: Snow boots have insulating layers in them usually made of shearling also known as sherpa which is wool derived from sheep. They are incredible for the snowy climates.
3.) The Uppers of Snow Boots: The uppers of the snow boots are usually made of leather which is the best material to make the boots flexible, comfortable, water-resistant and stylish. Though an additional wax coating is required to make leather entirely waterproof.
4.) Flexibility: Flexibility is another feature that is present in snow boots and is essential for trekking through the snow.
5.) Ankle Stability: The snow boots need to be at least ankle high to save your feet from any twists in case you slip in the snow.
6.) Waterproof: Snow boots have to be waterproof so that when the snow melts on the boots, the boots don’t get soggy. For this leather uppers with an additional wax coating is a must.
7.) Great Traction: Snow boots need to have an anti-skid outsole so that when you walk on the snow, you don’t skid.
8.) Toe Protection: Generally snow boots have extra padding in the toe area because the toe is the area that is prone to frost bites. So, the toes need to be kept in maximum warmth.
9.) Thick And Rigid Outsoles: While wading through the deep snow, thick soles are what is most essential. And rigidity is what will save you from twists of ligaments in case you slip off in the slippery snow.
Can You Wear Hunter Boots in the Snow?
While hunter boots have excellent waterproofing properties being made of complete rubber, yet being only waterproof is not enough for a good snow boot.
Let’s look at some of the disadvantages of wearing hunter boots in the snow:
1.) No Thick Outsoles: Hunter boots do not have thick outsoles. Infact, they have quite thin outsoles that will easily allow the cold to enter your feet while you step on the snow.
2.) No Tread in the Outsoles: Hunter boots have smooth outsoles that are not even anti-skid and can make you slip in the snow.
3.) Rubber Turns Cold: Hunter boots have rubber outer and rubber do not provide insulation from the cold. Infact, rubber will turn cold and will transfer that cold to your feet.
4.) They Are Not Flexible: Hunter boots are not very flexible and will not let your feet flex while you have to trek in the snow
5.) No Insulation: Hunter boots do not have fleece lining to keep feet warm and insulated.
6.) Not Breathable: Hunter boots do not have breathable lining to keep feet dry in case you have cold sweat.
How to Wear Hunter Boots in Winter / Snow?
Hunter boots are not meant for the snow and you definitely cannot expect them to serve like your snow boots, yet if you have already bought a pair of hunter boots for exploring the snow, I have got some ideas to make them workable for the weather:
1.) Wear Hunter Boots with Thick Woolen Socks:
Wearing woolen socks is perhaps the best and the easiest option to turn your hunter boots apt for the freezing cold. Choose a thicker one so that it’s capable of fighting the outside freezing temperature.
2.) Layer Up Socks One on the Other:
If you do not have woolen socks and don’t want to invest in one recently, you can layer up multiple socks that’s already in your wardrobe. This will also help to create that insulating barrier for the boots.
3.) Wear Your Hunter Boots with Woolen Pants:
Woolen pants will act as an insulating layer for the legs while you tuck them in your hunter boots and walk in the cold.
4.) Choose Knee Length Hunter Boots:
Some hunter boots come with knee length shafts and these are apt for the snowy weather as they help to cover a larger area of the leg from the outside cold and prevent water and snow from entering into the boots.
5.) Choose the Insulated Hunter Boots:
Nowadays hunters have come up with new technologies and models where you get the insulated boots. So, if you are someone living in the cold weather and want to style in hunters, these insulated boots would be the best option for you.
6.) Incorporate Thick Insulated Insoles:
These insoles are thick and keep the cold out from entering the boots while you step on the icy grounds.
